How to Choose and Use Sunscreen

We hear all over that you need to keep sunscreen on. But, how do you choose the right sunscreen for your needs? There are so many options in sunscreen from the various SPFs to lotions or sprays. Not to mention the additives such as waterproof or tear-free. Choosing a sunscreen that is right for you can be tricky. Let’s take a look at some of the deciding factors.

When you are looking to protect your kids and yourself, you should look for a sunscreen that offers at least SPF 30.  Some cosmetics put SPF in their cosmetics, however, it is usually lower than this value and offers little to no value to you.  Find a sunscreen that works well with your makeup should that be a concern.

There are many facial sunscreens that offer better protection and won’t clog your pores as well.  The higher the SPF the more protection you are getting. And, ensure whatever you choose it is a broad-spectrum sunscreen. This means that it protects from both UVA and UVB rays.  This will ensure that you are fully protected from the sun’s rays. When possible cover your skin up with lightweight fabric, which is really the best protection overall.

Waterproof sunblock is best for when in and around water

If you plan to be in the water or if it is really hot out, you might want to consider waterproof sunblock. Waterproof allows you and your kids to enjoy the water for up to 40-80 minutes with full sunblock protection that won’t wear off instantly as soon as the water hits. This is a very common type of sunblock.

And, if you plan to be in the sun, be sure you put sunblock on 15-30 mins before you go out. This is a step that is commonly missed but this will allow your skin to absorb the sunblock and allows it to protect you better.

Don’t forget your lips! During the day the sun’s rays can be devastating on your lips as well as your body. You need to protect your lips from UV rays just as much as you need to protect your body. There are many lip glosses that contain SPF out there and you should reapply as soon as you feel it is necessary.

Ensure you use enough sunblock

Sunblock should go on thick and you should use at least a shot glass worth with each application. You should apply sooner, rather than later, don’t wait until you burn. And, you need to reapply often and generously.  It is recommended that you reapply ever 1 1/2 – 2 hours, depending on the conditions. If it is really hot and the sun is intense then ensure you are covered. You can never have too much sunblock, after all.

Everyone needs sunblock. It does not matter what your skin tone is. Some skin tones are better equipped with natural sunblock. However, you are still opening yourself up to health conditions later in life. Better to be safe than sorry.

I have been camping and going outdoors for over 15 years! My first experience was when I joined the scouts. There I learned a lot. From building a campfire to set up a really big tent. Then I know this is awesome. Around 2005 I also started Geocaching. This is a lot of fun. And every time we go camping we look at the map to see if there are some nice caches around.
