A good campfire gets to the soul.  It is a source of heat and a way to cook your food when camping. But, it is also a way that many people relax and enjoy the outdoors. Watching the campfire dance in against the night does something to your mental state that is nothing but positive.

If you have enjoyed a good campfire with your friends and family you certainly know what we mean. However, after the campfire is over, it leaves behind this campfire smell that seems to never want to go away. Some wood is worse than others. And, if there isn’t a breeze to take the smoke away, you’ll find it to be worse as well. Let’s take a look at what we can do to get that campfire smell out of your clothes and camping gear.

For all your camping gear, it is important that when you get home you put it all outside. Don’t leave the tent all packed up in its bag, that will certainly not help get the smell out. But, open it up and let it stand outside for a bit. If the smell is really strong, you might want to spritz it with some rubbing alcohol and water mix. This will allow the smell to be absorbed by the mixture and then evaporated by the sunshine. You will soon see that this is a great way to get your tent smelling better.

Removing Smoke Smell from your clothes

For your clothing and bags, washing is going to be the best bet.  Washing everything in hot water, the hot water will open up the fibers to really work at getting the smell out. Adding some vinegar or baking soda to the water can further assist the washing machine. Of course, use laundry soap alongside these add ons.

For your sleeping bag and other things that are washable, you can well, wash them.  However, sleeping bags can be hard on home washing machines. You probably should take it to the laundromat. However, if you don’t want that expense and time, you can lay it out in the driveway or where it will get good sunlight as well.

And, well, spray it up with the same spray as above. Or sprinkle baking soda on it, let it sit, and then shake it off and even vacuum if you’d like.  In fact, they have vacuum cleaner powders that are made to get smells out, those work really well too.

Removing Smoke Smell from your hair

For your hair, you can use a citrus spray.  Add some zest of citrus fruit to a water spray bottle.  Let it sit for 25-30 mins to really absorb with the water and then spritz your hair. Ensure that you coat your hair, as the citrus dries, it will deodorize your hair. This spritz can be used on all of your gear as well.

Do not use something similar to Fabreeze. This product contains chemicals that can give you an allergic reaction.  This is more of a cover-up than a fix, which then leads to a smoke smelling rose bush.  Avoid covering just covering up the smell.
